What’s the Lowest Carb Beer in Australia?

Cutting your carbs but fancy a beer tonight – that’s okay. We’ve scoured the beer taps and the beer fridges at some of Australia’s most popular pubs and checked the carbs in your nightly tipple. It was a hard job, but we managed – and then we came up with our list of the lowest carb beers in Australia.

What Counts as Low Carb Beer?

It’s not like low-alcohol where there’s a clear, official, number that allows a beer to call itself low-carb – and as such, the numbers on ones that do vary quite a bit.

If you want to create your own definition though, on average beer has 1.4g of carbs per 100g – if a beer is lower than that you could class it as lower carb, and anything around half of that you could say is low carb.

Table of Contents

Is Low Carb Beer Low Calorie?

Not necessarily – when we did a post comparing all the calories in Australian beer it wasn’t a low-carb beer that came up the lowest overall – it was a lower alcohol one.

And the reason for that is simple, most of the calories in beer come from the alcohol, not the amount of carbs so, while you can find lower carb beers that are also lower in calories (Hahn Superdry being one), they don’t necessarily go hand in hand.

Nor is low-carb beer necessarily a recipe for weight loss. It’s calories that make you fat, not carbs per se (I’m aware it’s a bit more complex than that in terms of how quickly and where etc, but let’s keep it simple as you’re trying to get to the pub) even the lowest carb beer on our list still contains 87 calories a can, so, you can’t drink gallons of the stuff and end up with a six pack – at least of the abs type rather than the BWS type anyway!

Nor is low carbs, or low calorie count an excuse to drink more of it than is healthy, it’s alcohol that’s most harmful in booze, not calories or carbs – remember to always drink responsibly.

So, with the sensible advice out of the way, let’s get down to the reason you’re here… carbs in Aussie beer.

How We Worked out the Carb Counts

We checked the nutritional information from all the major breweries, and some of the smaller ones that you’re likely to see in your local. If the brewery didn’t publish these, we went with numbers from sources like My Fitness Pal – these are marked with an asterix in the long list below.

We cover every craft beer in Australia and so there may be another low-carb Aussie beer that comes in under this lot, but it’s already a monster list and, we couldn’t cover every brewery in every state, so we went with national popularity!

Also, a note on serving sizes – on the face of it a beer that only comes in a 330ml bottle is potentially going to look lower carb than one that only comes in a schooner or pint, just because you drink less of it. That’s not bad thing, but it won’t give the most accurate figure if you then order three pints of it.

So we’ve tried to break things down in the easiest way possible and list them by carbs per 100ml – and then, give carbs for a standard sized bottle/can for the brand and an NSW schooner (425ml) and an NSW pint (570ml).

The Lowest Carb Beer in Australia is …

By volume, the lowest calorie beer in Australia is – Beyond Beer.

Brewed in Queensland, I originally wasn’t going to award this the prize as I wasn’t sure it was a big enough brand and didn’t think you could get it in pubs, but I’ve been into a couple of pubs recently and found it on tap, so, I’m guessing it’s only going to get more popular.

It has no carbs, no sugar and 1 g of protein – how they do that and still make it taste like lager I don’t know. It also has 24 calories per 100g (or 87 per 355ml can).

Or, check out new kid on the block Hahn Ultra Low Carb, which has fewer than 1g of carbs per 330ml bottle – that also has 87 calories per bottle.

If you don’t live somewhere where either of these are sold, the next lowest carb choice is Pure Blonde Low Carb – not surprisingly from the name, which has just 0.5g of carbs per 100ml.

So, technically that’s all you really need to know to cut carbs in the pub – but what if about your preferred tipple isn’t one of these two, how does that stack up?

Find out below in our round up of carb counts in many of the most popular Australian beers. There’s a quick table below per 100ml of ten lowest, or, if you just want the numbers for bottles, schooners or pints for your favourite, then scan down for a monster list – or, use the links in the Table of Contents above to go to your favourite.

What Did I Miss?

So, there you go, our list of the lowest carbs beers in Australia – and yes, I know there are a whole load more that you can find in Dan Murphy’s or your local craft brewery that aren’t on this list. I kept it to beers sold in pubs so it wasn’t the longest post on the internet.

If however, I have missed out your favourite pub tipple, or a regional special, and you need the answer to how many calories it contains, drop me a note in the comments and I’ll do what I can to find out the answer and add it to the list .
