These sweet and smoky grilled onions are caramelized to perfection with a tangy balsamic glaze. They make a fantastic side dish, burger topping, or salad addition!

If you came from our guide to budget-friendly superfoods, you’ll know that onions have a heap of health-promoting compounds within them – but we tend to get stuck on how we cook them. This simple recipe shakes things up a bit.

Serve these onions as a side dish with meat, fish or stew dishes, toss them in salads or chop them and serve them on burgers or inside sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • 2 large red or white onions, or 3-4 smaller white onions
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Method

Preheat the Grill

Heat your grill to medium heat (around 375°F/190°C).

Cut the Onions

Remove the skin and outer layers, then cut small onions in half or slice larger onions into thick 1cm rings. Keep the rings together to prevent them from falling apart while grilling.

Make the Glaze

In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, balsamic vinegar, honey, Dijon mustard, salt and pepper.

Brush On The Glaze

Carefully brush both sides of each onion ring with the balsamic glaze, making sure they are well coated.

Start Grilling

Place the onion pieces or rings directly on the grill grates or use a grill basket to prevent them from slipping through.

Flip & Reglaze

Cook for about 4–5 minutes per side, flipping carefully with tongs. Brush with more glaze as they cook to enhance the flavor.
